Abstract
1,181,426. Gaseous fuels. J. J. PACKO. 18 Oct., 1967, No. 47526/67. Heading C5E. [Also in Division G1] A process for visually identifying a normally colourless fuel gas and/or detecting the leakage of the gas from a container or conduit comprises mixing an indicating agent with the gas so that the gas is visible through a transparent portion of the container or conduit or becomes visible when the gas leaks into the atmosphere. The indicating agent may be a coloured gas such as diazomethane, chlorine monoxide, chlorine, bromine, &c. or phosphorus vapour may be used which on escape into the atmosphere, phosphoresces in the dark. Napthalene or metallic mercury vapours may be added to cause fluorescence of the gas in ultra violet light. Pyrophoric substances such as dimethyl arsine, boron hydride or phosphine, which spontaneously ignite or give a visible wisp when they leak into the atmosphere, may be used. Titanium tetrachloride or stannic chloride also give a similar indication. Other compounds giving a visible signal on leakage of the gas into the atmosphere have the general formula ZR n X 2-n , where Z is zinc or cadmium, R is an aliphatic straight chain, branched chain or cyclic organic group having 1-10 carbon atoms, X is hydrogen or halogen from the group of chlorine, bromine, iodine and fluorine, and n is an integer of at least one. Other suitable compounds have the general formula MR n X 3-n , where M is aluminum or boron.
