Abstract
1,179,942. Valves. AMERICAN STANDARD Inc. 2 Feb., 1967, No. 46448/69. Divided out of 1,179,941. Heading F2V. A readily removable and replaceable plastics cartridge 50, which is adapted to contain all the moving parts of a hot and cold water mixing valve and to be mounted in the brass body 100 of the valve, comprises a generally U-shaped casing 55, a ceramic valve seat 70 fixed against rotational movement within the casing, a valve member 80 rotatably and slidably movable relative to the seat, and a pivot race 35 by means of which movement may be imparted to the valve member 80, the pivot race being retained within the casing by a cap 60, and the combined cartridge being secured to the body 100 by two bolts (49, Figs. 2-5, not shown). With the cartridge assembled in the body as shown, inlet passages (43a, Fig. 26, not shown) and 43b and outlet passage 45, all formed in the valve body 100, communicate with corresponding passages formed both in the casing bottom and valve seat, the two inflow passages terminating in proportioning recesses (75a) and 75b, both of which recesses are formed in that face of the seat which faces the valve member 80. In operation, rotation of the handle 33 about a pin 95 secured in the pivot race, places either one or both of the proportioning recesses in communication with the outlet passage 45 via a longitudinal recess 81 formed in the underside of valve member 80. Alternatively, rotation of the handle about an axis normal to the seat 70, causes similar rotation of the valve member 80 and hence proportioning of the relative volumes of hot and cold water passing from the proportioning recesses to the outlet 45. Leakage between the seat and valve member is inhibited by the provision of a resilient ring 65a in each of the inflow passages and a similar ring 65b in the outflow passage, such rings, together with the varying diameter of portions of each passage, serving to tightly bias the seat against the closure member.
