Abstract

[Also in Divisions Gl and G4] ' The degree of filling of a trawl net is indicated from a measure of the rate of flow of water at a specific point in its interior. The trawl net is provided with seven flow meters arranged down the centre of the net, 1, 3, 5, 7, Fig. 1, to sense axial water flow rate, and at the side of the net, 2, 4, 6, to sense water flow perpendicular to the side of the net. Turbine flowmeters, Fig 3 (not shown), may be used, the frequency or amplitude of whose output signal is indicative of flow rate. Alternatively the flowmeters may be d.c. generators, or differential pressure flowmeters, or the speed of a fan wheel may be transmitted mechanically by flexible shafts. As the fish in the net comes level with a central flow meter its output drops from a constant level indicative of the overall flow rate to zero as the fish cover it. Conversely as the level of fish approaches a side flowmeter its output increases from a low level to a maximum when the fish is level with it to a minimum when it is covered. The flowmeters are connected sequentially via switch 14 to a circuit sensitive to an intermediate voltage or frequency, such that when the signal from a flow meter is above this level a respective lamp (Li)-(L?), Fig. 4 (not shown) is lit and below this level the lamp is extinguished. To correct for changes of overall flow rate the outputs from meters 1-6 may be subtracted from that of meter 7 which senses overall flow rate.
