Abstract
1,173,110. Piezoelectric motors; reciprocating motors. BENRUS WATCH CO. Inc. 1 Aug., 1968 [28 Aug., 1967], No. 36832/68. Heading H2A. [Also in Divisions G3 and H3] In an electric watch (see Division G3) the 9À6 kilohertz output signal frequency of an electronic oscillator is converted by a frequency reducing network and a multivibrator circuit into two signals each having a frequency of 4 Hertz. These signals are fed to the leads 96 and 100 respectively of a circuit 24, the terminals 70, 72 of which are connected to a 1¢ volt battery. The input signals actuate the circuit 24 such that voltages of about 10 volts are alternately applied to the electrodes 56, 58 of a cantilever mounted piezoelectric crystal 54. A pawl 36 attached to the free end of the crystal drives a ratchet wheel 38 which in turn drives the gear train of the watch. In a modification, the piezoelectric crystal is replaced by an electromagnetically latched armature 102. The armature may be a permanently magnetized strip pivotally mounted between the polepieces 104, 106 of a magnetizable structure 108.
