Abstract

1,171,558. Helmets; ear protectors. L. P. FRIEDER. 25 April, 1967 [5 May, 1966], No. 19092/67. Heading A3V. [Also in Division H4] An ear protector 14 for use in a helmet 12 comprises a rigid shell 18 having an opening 24 for the ear and a resilient sealing member 28 of elliptical annular shape, the seal 28 being detachably secured to the shell 18 by an annular spring 26 which is concentric with seal 28. The shell 18 consists of a rear wall 20 having an inwardly extending flange 22 the flange being constricted at 27 to increase its flexibility. The spring 26 e.g. of resilient plastics material, is cemented to the flange 22 and the seal 28 is detachably secured to the spring 26 by a flap 38. The seal 28 consists of a ring 30 of resilient material such as sponge rubber or sponge plastics material e.g. sponge polyurethane which is covered by a layer 32 of vinyl material. The shell 18 may also include a block 42 of sound absorbing material e.g. sponge polyurethane, and an earphone 40. The protector 14 may be attached to a helmet 12 by strips 16a, 16b of "Velcro" (Registered Trade Mark) fastening.
