Abstract

1,168,263. Surgical injection apparatus. J. C. HOBBS. 20 Oct., 1966 [4 March, 1966], No. 47078/66. Heading A5R. Apparatus for injecting a radio-opaque liquid into a vascular system for diagnostic purposes comprises a syringe assembly including a cylinder, a plunger 52 therein, and an endwise movable stem 50 connected to the plunger, a drive assembly D which is axially aligned with and connected to the stem, and a motor assembly operatively connected to the drive assembly for moving the stem at a constant predetermined speed. As shown, the syringe assembly is connected to an injection catheter 80 and the plunger is driven by a d.c. electric motor 30 through gearing 32, 33, 34 and a rotating threaded shaft 35. The electric motor 30 is governed to turn at a constant predetermined speed by feed-back provided from a tachometer/generator device 37 and it is stated that one of the gearing pinions 32 includes a spring loaded clutch which prevents overloading. A nozzle 56 on the syringe cylinder is used for connecting the apparatus to the injection catheter and the motor and transmission are contained within a casing 29. The transmission is provided with trip switches (71, 72) adjustably positioned and connected to switch off the motor so that the fluid capacity of the syringe when it is being filled or emptied may be varied. An adjustably positioned stop-nut 51 and a scale (48) also allow the capacity of the syringe to be varied and the syringe cylinder 53 may be partially surrounded by a heating element so that the injection liquid is at body temperature. The apparatus is pivotally mounted on an arm (25) adjustably mounted by a rack and pinion mechanism on a console (A) (Figure 1, not shown) to which is also connected a hand or foot operated on-off switch (23). The console includes dials controlling the period and rate of injection and a dial (14) for energising an X-ray control circuit after a chosen period. A device is said to be provided for switching off the apparatus if an undesirable difference in electric potential exists between the injection apparatus and the patient.
