Abstract

1,162,428. Ultrasonic distance measurement. REALISATIONS ULTRASONIQUES. 30 Jan., 1967 [8 Feb., 1966], No. 4511/67. Heading H4D. In a system providing a digital measurement of the separation of two points in a medium by counting clock pulses in the interval between transmission of an ultrasonic pulse from the first point and reception of the echo obtained by reflection of this pulse at the second point, the measurement is made independent of variations in the ultrasonic wave propagation velocity by making the clock pulse frequency the frequency defined by an acoustical resonance phenomenon in a space of predetermined length within the medium. In the embodiment of Fig. 2, clock pulses from generator 16 are passed to counter 15 for a time determined by receivercontrolled gate 14 and the separation of transmitting/receiving transducer 11 from a reflecting surface S is indicated directly on unit 17. A transducer pair A 0 separated by a sample of the medium or in the medium itself provides an acoustic feedback path for an amplifier in generator 16 to define the clock pulse frequency. If the wave propagation velocity varies with distance along the propagation path between transducer 11 and the surface, transducer pair A 0 and further pairs A 1 , A 2 . . . are sequentially connected to the amplifier during the pulse propagation interval to give a sequence of different clock pulse frequencies related to the different propagation velocities in respective successive portions of the said propagation path. Auxiliary receiving transducers T 1 , T 2 . . . disposed at different distances from transducer 11 detect the ultrasonic pulse propagating between transducer 11 and the surface and provide timedisplaced trigger signals which actuate commutating circuits C 0 , C 1 , C 2 . . . to effect the sequential connection of the transducer pairs A 0 , A 1 , A 2 . . . to the amplifier.
