[Also in Division F2] A machine for cleaning the surfaces of rods and tubes comprises a cleaning unit 2, having at least one cleaning or cutting tool rotatable both about its own axis and about the axis of the article to be cleaned and having means for pressing the tool into or away from contact with the surface of the article. A first drive motor 11 drives a rotor 9 about a fixed sun-wheel 8, planet-wheels 15 mounted in the rotor 9, being thereby rotated to drive cleaning tools 13 about their own axes while rotation of the rotor 9 causes simultaneous orbital rotation of the cutters around the rod or tube to be cleaned. Tools 13 are mounted eccentrically in casings 12 supported in the rotor 9 in such a way that pivotal movement of the casings can occur to bring the tools 13 into or away from contact with the rod or tube to be cleaned. This pivotal movement is caused by relative angular movement between a ring 18 mounted in the rotor 9 and driven independently thereof by motor 20 through gear train 19, the ring 18 having a cam track thereon which operates on lever members 16, 17 connected to the casings 12 and spring urged apart by spring 23. Motor 20 is of variable speed type and is regulated to cause ring 18 to lag behind or rotate at the same speed as rotor 9 in order to pivot the cutters towards or away from the rod or tube surface. Feed and carry over rolls 1, 4 are adjustable in height and are arranged to grip the article to be cleaned by the action of pneumatic cylinders 5 controlled by sensor switches actuated by a bar or tube being fed through the machine.
