Abstract

1,153,038. Drying webs. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 22 Dec., 1966 [23 Dec., 1965], No. 54748/65. Heading F4G. In apparatus for drying flexible web material, e.g. paper or board, heated air or gas is directed there onto as it passes about a heated roll 4, as shown, or on an endless belt in a tunnel drier, from a drying hood 2 comprising a number of individual compartments 10 arranged transversely of the direction of travel of the web and the drying effect of the air or gas in each compartment is controlled in accordance with the temperature of the air or gas withdrawn from the compartment after contact with the web. The compartments 10 are formed by axially spaced, circumferentially extending flanges 5 and a perforated concave wall 3, the air entering through inlets 11 under the control of individual dampers 15 controlled by temperature sensing means mounted in at least one of exhaust pipes 14 leading from compartments adjacent the web formed by extension of the flanges 5. In a modification a plurality of drying hoods are used and the temperature sensing means of one hood controls the corresponding damper 15 of an adjacent hood. In further modifications the sensing elements may control the temperature and/or humidity of the drying medium.
