Abstract

In an arrangement for investigating radiation in a well-logging system measured parameter values are transmitted to a remote point by discrete signals e.g. digitally, or by binary code. A sonde may include a neutron source 34 Fig.2 of plutonium beryllium or pulsed neutrons and parameters of secondary radiation may be measured by for example a scintillation crystal and photomultiplier 37-38, the resulting pulse heights or pulse durations being encoded by gating the output of an oscillator 84 to a binary scaler, the output from which is applied to one or more transmission lines 153-156 in sequence in response to an initiating pulse from a multi-vibrator 104 and under the control of a clock source 100. Arrangements are included to block the input path whilst the circuit is so acting, and the binary scaler is reset by a pulse from a multi-vibrator 92. At the surface, amplifying and separating circuits 55, connected one to each cable, insert the coded value in a register or analyzer wherein pulses of different radiation energy levels may be stored on for example magnetic cores, and counted, and may be readout for the production of a spectrum and/or may be recorded via a digital-to-analogue converter and a pulse-height analyzer which selects analogue pulses exceeding a selected threshold and width. The invention may be applied to measuring decay characteristics of the formations or elements therein, i.e. the decay of thermal neutrons or radioactive isotopes by the emission of gamma rays, the slope of a thermal neutron decay curve indicating the thermal neutron capture crosssection of formation elements. The formation is irradiated by pulses of fast neutrons for this last test, and detection may be made at predetermined time intervals after each pulse. Time intervals also may be transmitted in binary form. A Deuterium-tritium source of fast neutrons is exemplified, and it is pulsed by a blocking oscillator and a phantastron, the arrangement may be used to determine the presence of sodium and thus salt water, and a sodium iodide scintillating crystal detector may be used in conjunction with a photomultiplier. The uphole analyzer may respond only to radiation detected in a predetermined energy range, which may be adjustable.
