Abstract

1,142,993. Magnetic head. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 10 Oct., 1966 [13 Oct., 1965], No. 45184/66. Heading G5R. In a magnetic head arrangement in which separate playback 10 and recording 9 heads scan, with the playback head leading, the same track on tape 13, the head windings are interconnected and the heads are designed such that on playback the signal induced in the playback head is at least 10 times as great as the signal induced in the recording head by the same portion of tape. The recording head gap 17 is much longer than that 16 of the playback head and the number of turns on the playback coil is greater than that of the recording coil. High frequency bias current is applied to the common junction of the heads but this may be prevented from appearing across the playback head by means of a shunt capacitor. During recording any signal recorded by the playback head is erased by the bias current applied to the record head. The number of turns on the playback coil may be sufficiently large to saturate the head during recording. The heads may be separate or may form part of the same structure, Fig. 3. The playback head width may be less than that of the recording head. Where the arrangement is used for frequency modulation video recording on oblique tracks on a tape, the heads are spaced by the distance occupied by one or more complete lines. Where the video information is interlaced the heads are preferably spaced by the distance corresponding to a small whole number of frames plus, where the whole number is odd, a half line of video information.
