A light and heat-sensitive material comprises a heat-sensitive layer of a hydrophilic binder in which are dispersed hydrophobic particles of polyethylene, polyvinylidene chloride or polyvinylcarbazole and also containing silver halide so that on exposure to light and development (if necessary) to produce a silver image, exposure to uniform infrared radiation will render the heat-sensitive layer less water-permeable in the infrared absorbent silver image areas. The silver halide may be in the heat-sensitive layer or an adjacent layer. The material, which has been rendered selectively less water-permeable, may be further developed as set out in parent Specification 1,139, 891. In the examples, a paper support is coated with either (i) a gelatino silver halide print-out emulsion or (ii) a gelatine layer containing a pyrazolidinone developer and a silver halide emulsion to produce a heatdevelopable material, and overcoated with a heat-sensitive gelatine layer containing dispersed polyethylene particles, imagewise exposed to light and heated (in the second material) to produce a silver image, uniformly exposed to infrared radiation and developed by (i) applying an aqueous dye solution, (ii) pressing against an art paper to remove water-permeable areas and exposing the remainder to light to produce a positive silver image or (iii) pressing against a carbon sheet to transfer the carbon to the waterpermeable areas and producing a spirit duplicating master.
