Abstract
1,136,144. Electron beam tubes. ALLMANNA SVENSKA ELEKTRISKA A.B. 6 April, 1966 [12 April, 1965], No. 15236/66. Heading H1D. An electron beam tube comprises a cathode 2 which is surrounded by insulating, e.g. ceramic, material 6 except for a surface 7 facing away from the anode or target 3, a plasma formed by ions and electrons emitted from the cathode spot 8 acting as the source of electrons for the electron beam which is accelerated by the electrode 4. A magnetic focusing field may be provided. The cathode spot is established by an arc struck between the cathode and an auxiliary anode 5 which is lowered into contact with the cathode and then raised. Alternatively, the arc may be struck by means ofa high ohmic electrode on the cathode surface or by means of a laser beam focused on the cathode surface. The cathode material may be solid or liquid metal, e.g. copper or mercury Screens 11 and 13 are provided to catch neutral atoms and a screen 10 of insulating material is inserted between the cathode and the auxiliary anode to prevent a current in the auxiliary circuit. The electron beam may be used for welding or vacuum melting and the beam may be brought out of the vacuum vessel through a window, either the anode or target 3 or both this member and the acceleration anode 4 being outside the vessel.
