Abstract
1,134,916. Automatic exchange systems. SIEMENS A.G. 28 April, 1967 [29 April, 1966], No. 19595/67. Heading H4K. In a cross-point array in which bi-stable relays individually set to one state by applying a potential difference to the corresponding row and column conductors, and set to the other state by reversing this potential, isolating devices having a low resistance in one direction of conduction and a non-linear resistance in the other direction are connected in series with the relays. The resistance in the non-linear direction is of high value below a predetermined applied (e.g. threshold) voltage and of low value above it. Each isolating device may be a Zener diode or a rectifying element connected in parallel with a varistor, glow-discharge tube or four-layer diode. For switching selected relays to the first state selecting potentials below the threshold level are employed and the isolating devices function as normal diodes. To switch a relay to its other state a reverse potential difference above the threshold level is applied to the associated row and column conductors. The corresponding isolating device breaks down switching that relay to its other state. Paths in parallel with this relay and its isolating device and which connect to the energized row and column conductors pass through at least two isolating devices in series thus provided the applied potential difference is less than twice the threshold level only the selected relay is switched.
