Abstract

1,131,506. Coating surfaces. BURNDY CORP. 18 Nov., 1965 [25 Nov., 1964], No. 49027/65. Heading B2K. A process for enabling a cross-linked natural or synthetic rubber article to be pointed to a thermosettable synthetic resin comprises treating a surface of the article with a chemical oxidising agent dissolved in an ionising solvent and depositing on the treated surface a coating of a thermoplastic polymer. The thermoplastic polymer is a substantially linear polymer which is not curable to form a thermoset resin and which is capable of forming an adherent bond with a thermoset epoxy, polyurethane or polysulphide resin without any surface preparation and without the use of an adhesive. The cross-linked rubber may be cleaned to remove grease and other surface contaminates prior to exposure to the oxidation treatment. The thermoplastic polymer may be a vinyl polymer, a co-polymer of acrylic or methacrylic acid, a co-polymer of vinyl pyridine, a linear polyamide or a linear polyurethane. The thermoplastic polymer may be applied to the treated surface as a solution. A top coating of a thermosettable epoxy, polyurethane or polysulphide resin may be applied to the treated surface. The chemical oxidising agent may be sodium hypochlorite. The synthetic resin coating may be applied by dipping or spraying and then dried for 30 minutes at 340‹F.
