Abstract
1,129,653. Rotation-convergent radiation therapy apparatus. A. E. ATOVMIAN, K. G. BYUNAU, I. A. DAVYDOVA, L. A. EMELYANOV, A. B. LITVAN and V. K. YAGOLKOVSKY. 22 Nov., 1965, No. 49483/65. Heading H5R. In a radiation therapy apparatus which produces a rotational-convergent movement of the irradiating beam, the radiation head 16 is mounted so that it is rotatable about two mutually perpendicular axes 24 and 25 and also about a third axis that of laterally directed driven swivel drum 2, which axis is parallel to axis 24 but offset from the plane containing axes 24 and 25, the head 16 is mounted opposite counterweight 17 on a parallelogram linkage which is pivoted at 18, 19 the centres of its unoccupied sides the pivots being mounted on the swivel drum 2, and a lever system comprising sector 10 pivoting about point 11, connecting rods 13 and 31 joining sector 10 and parallelogram side 20 through joints 12, 14, 30 and 32 to slide 15 is driven by motor 7 via transmission 8, 9 to oscillate the parallelogram about its pivots, the corresponding lever system of connecting rods 33 and 39 and a cranked slide of two parts 35 and 36 producing a corresponding motion in the radiation head. In order to accommodate the translation movement of the parallelogram and the rotation of the swivel drum about its axis and of the head 16 about axis 24 the slides of the two lever system are made in two portions articulated by joints 28 and 37 which transmit the two types of motion. The two lever systems are arranged so that the cranks are of equal length and the connecting rods form equal angles with the direction of lateral motion of the slides. The swivel drum 2 is rotated by motor 3 through transmission 4 and gears 5 and 6, and the head 16 is preferably rotated about axis 24 by a separate motor 42 acting through gears 43, 44. If desired, the counterweight 17 may be replaced by an absorbing screen 27 on arm 26, which then functions as the counterweight.
