Abstract

[Also in Divisions B7 and F4] A puncturable compressed gas, e.g. helium storage cylinder 82 has its discharge outlet releasably connected to the inlet of a device to be inflated, e.g. a distress signalling balloon 62 by means of two axially aligned mating conduit sections 224, 258 secured to said cylinder and balloon and held together by a locking pin 290 and a spring-biased retaining pin 284 until at a predetermined pressure in the balloon a diaphragm-actuated release pin 278 frees the locking pin 290; the tube section 258 having a non-return valve 254 to prevent escape of gas from the balloon. A folded cable 230 housed in a cavity 294 in the base of conduit section 258 is anchored at the upper and lower ends to said sections 258, 224, whereby the ascended balloon is held captive. Discharge of cylinder 82 is effected by rupture of a sealing disc 208 when a pin 96 which normally holds a piercer 92 against a spring 94 is withdrawn by means of a pivoted lever 98 and the discharged gas flows through flow restricting orifices 246, 250 in inverted cup members 234, 236 to condense water vapour and form a fog or mist.
