Abstract

1,128,611. Laminates and laminating. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 21 Jan., 1966 [3 Feb., 1965], No. 4681/65. Heading B5N. A process for the manufacture of laminated sheet materials comprises applying a polyurethane coating composition to a surface of a reinforcing material, the coating then being dried before applying to the said coated surface a sheet or block of cellular polymeric material, the latter then being compressed whilst being held at a temperature of 140-200‹ C., so that after removal of the compressing force the cellular polymeric material remains substantially in its compressed state. As described the reinforcing material is paper; textile material, e.g. woven cotton or synthetic fibre fabrics made from e.g. polyhexamethylene adipamide or polyethylene terephthalate; rubber, synthetic rubber; sheets of synthetic plastics materials; or metallic sheets e.g. of aluminium. The cellular polymeric material may be rigid, semi-rigid, or flexible before compression and preferably has a preponderance of open cells. The material may be foamed cellular polyurethane, polystyrene, polypropylene, polyepoxide, polyamide, polyester, polyvinyl, or polycarbonate material. The polyurethane coating may be produced from reaction mixtures containing organic polyisocyanates, and polyhydroxy compounds and normally contains a solvent, e.g. hydrocarbons, chlorinated hydrocarbons, ethers, and ketones, or mixtures thereof. The coating is applied to the reinforcing material by brushing, spraying, or dipping, and is then dried at atmospheric or elevated temperatures. The cellular polymeric material is then applied to the coated surface and the assembly is preferably pre-heated before heat and pressure is applied by a press or rollers. The cellular material is preferably compressed to 2 to 20% of its original thickness. If desired the laminates may contain many layers, in which case the reinforcing material is coated on all surfaces which are to contact the cellular material, and in an example a three layer sandwich is produced. In one embodiment the laminate has thermal insulating properties, and in another it can be used as a substitute for natural leather.
