Abstract

1,127,279. Boosters. CANADIAN INDUSTRIES Ltd. 29 March, 1967 [2 May, 1966], No. 14309/67. Heading F3A. An explosive booster assembly particularly for use with blasting agents of low sensitivity comprises a resilient thermoplastic cylindrical body 21 terminating at one end in a section 23 of smaller internal diameter adapted to receive in slidable yet gripping relationship an initiator 26 of tubular shape e g. an electric blasting cap, and a cast explosive composition 25 contained within the section of the body having a larger internal diameter. A cavity 28, to receive a blasting cap, may be provided in the cast explosive. Fins 24 to ensure a snug fit in, for example, the booster well of a blasting agent container may extend outward from the section 23. A protective cap 27 anchored in the cast explosive may be provided at one end of the body 21. The body is made from polyethylene or rubber. The cast explosive composition comprises pentolite, composition B, cyclonite, PETN or TNT. In the manufacture of the booster the body 21 is filled with molten explosive and the narrow section 23 is kept free of explosive by a tight-fitting metal pin. The cap 27 is inserted before the explosive sets. The booster is used particularly in seismec marine operations to detonate a charge of nitrocarbonitrate contained in a metal can, the booster being inserted in a well provided at one end of the can.
