Abstract

1,125,356. Position encoders. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. 15 May, 1967 [16 May, 1966], No. 22483/67. Heading G4H. A system for the remote position indication of a moving element e.g. an element of a nuclearreactor re-charging system includes a member having coded parallel tracks e.g. as in Fig. 2, the member being driven in synchronism with the element between a fixed light source and a photo-electric detector, a selector, e.g. a disc as in Fig. 3, uncovering the tracks in succession so that the output from the detector is a plurality of markings serially transmitted. The selector and coded member each have a supplementary track with markings which, when they coincide allow light to pass to a further photo-electric detector to enable the output from the first detector to be read. In the embodiment described, both the angular position of a bridge 12 (Fig. 1) and the linear position of a carriage 14 on the bridge 12 are read by means of binary coded members sensed by photo-oells as selectors rotate. The output from photo-cell 26 representing the angular position of the bridge is fed to a store 52 which controls a display system 54 and if it is required to position the bridge in accordance with a position entered via a keyboard 60, the output from the store and keyboard are fed to a comparator 62 the output from which stops the motor driving the bridge when coincidence is reached. The carriage may be similarly positioned. The coded member for the carriage is an endless belt having parallel longitudinal tracks, a selector disc scanning the tracks sequentially. The selector disc may be replaced by a drum.
