A telegraph keyboard transmitter has means to add one or more extra code groups to the transmitter store when there is to be stored a code group, e.g. Carriage Return, whose execution at the receiver requires a greater length of time than that necessary for the majority of code groups. In one embodiment Fig. 1 (not shown), operation of the CR key results in the storage in a mechanical store of two CR code groups. In a second embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), the CR key causes the storage of the CR code group followed by Letter or Figure Shift as appropriate. Fig. 4 shows a combination of these two arrangements in which operation of CR key 16 causes the storage in drum 1 of the three character sequence CR, CR, Letter Shift or Figure Shift. Key 16 moves bar 17 to the Letter Shift position and pulls down lever 19. Lever 19 pulls down pawl 21 and also, by way of nose 18, releases catch 15 from levers 12, 13. The levers are urged anticlockwise so that the upper end of one or other abuts a member which is positioned in accordance with bar 17 and which is subsequently rocked by cam 11. As shaft 7 rotates arm 24 moves pawl 21 which disengages from lever 19, allowing 15 to relatch, and rocks lever 27 clockwise, so storing the CR code group in drum 1. Further rotation of shaft 7 restores members 24, 21, and 27 at the positions shown. Cam 11 now moves lever 12 or 13 (13 as shown) so that ratchet 4 advances the store. Now cam 38 moves lever 29 which via lever 27 causes the second CR code to be stored in known manner, following which cam 10 causes ratchet 3 to step the store again. Lever 29 also moves lever 31 via nose 34, so unlatching levers 12, 13 again. Catch 15 returns to the position shown since cam 10 causes pin 37 to unlatch lever 31. When the next character key is operated, the Letter or Figure Shift code is stored and cam 11 steps the store via ratchet 4 or 5. Cam 38 then causes the operated key's code to be stored and the drum is stepped via ratchet 3.
