Abstract

<PICT:1122807/C6-C7/1> <PICT:1122807/C6-C7/2> <PICT:1122807/C6-C7/3> Barley is advanced up through an inclined water trough 2 by blades 24 which perform a slightly overlapping, rectilinear movement along the trough to advance the cereal and then rise over and back for a further rectilinear movement. The rectilinear and circular motion is imparted to the blades through a bar 22 held by four stub shafts 19 captive within kidney-shaped guide slots 20 of (anti-clockwise) rotating face plates 12. The blades conform to the interior shape of the trough and are perforated. The trough may be fabricated in stainless steel or glass fibre and may have a hot water jacket. The steeped grain may be further steeped in a second or subsequent trough after a period of draining and "resting" at the upper end of the previous trough. Nutrients, growth stimulators or growth inhibitors may be added to the water fed into the troughs.
