Abstract

A U-Si alloy suitable for use as a nuclear fuel contains 2-7.3% by weight of Si. It may contain minor additions of other metals, e.g. Al, C, Fe or Cr, to total amount of less than 2,000 ppm, to reduce swelling caused by irradiation. The alloy is preferably heat-treated at about 800 DEG C. for 1-3 days to transform it peritectoidally to the delta phase.
