Abstract

1,117,731. Papermaking. WYCOMBE MARSH PAPER MILLS. 17 Dec., 1964 [17 Sept., 1963], No. 36604/63. Headings D2A and D2B. A two-layer paper sheet presenting a smooth face on one side and an absorbent face on the other is made by spreading a first aqueous fibrous dispersion on to a supporting surface to form a base layer, spreading a second equeous fibrous suspension over the base layer to form an upper layer, extracting water from the spread suspensions to form a fibrous web, pressing to bond the layers, and drying the web. The suspension for the smooth face is of softwood fibres, and may be applied first; that for the absorbent face is of hardwood fibres. The suspensions may include colouring agents, wetstrengthening agents, resin size, wax emulsion or diatomaceous earth. As shown, fibres for the base layer are disintegrated and suspended in water in a disintegrator 1, passed through beaters 2 and a refiner 3 and diluted with water at 25. Additives may also be added at this stage. A similar train 7, 8, 9 and 26 is provided for the second suspension. The first suspension is passed through distributor 4 and slice 6 to moving endless wire cloth 5. The second suspension is spread from distributor 10 by flexible apron 13, the rate of flow being controlled by adjustable baffle 27. The belt 5 passes over vacuum boxes 11, to press 15 where ths web is couched onto planket 16. After a second press 17, the web is transferred to a hearted drying cylinder 18. creped off at 19, further dried on cylinders 20-23 and reeled at 24. Additives used in each layer in the examples are aluminium sulphate with or without melamime-formaldehyde resin.
