Abstract
Solid thermoplastic modifiers for vinyl chloride polymers comprise (A) 60-25 parts by weight of a polymer derived from monomer molecules having a single CH2=C, group, as the sole polymerizable group, at least 80% by weight of which are C1-C4 alkyl methacrylate molecules, and (B) 40-75 parts by weight of a rubbery copolymer of a mixture of (i) monomer molecules having a single CH2=C, group, as the sole polymerizable group, and (ii) polyethylenically unsaturated cross-linking monomer molecules, said mixture containing at least 80% by weight of C2-C8 alkyl acrylate molecules and 0.1-5% by weight of cross-linking molecules; the copolymer B per se having a glass temperature below 0 DEG C., and the polymer A per se having a glass temperature of at least 20 DEG C. and having been formed by emulsion polymerizing the monomeric precursor of A in the presence of a preformed latex of B under such conditions that substantially no new polymer particles are formed. In addition to the specified alkyl acrylates, component (i) of B may also include monomers such as alkyl methacrylates, acrylic and methacrylic acids and their nitriles, vinyl halides, vinyl esters, styrene and vinyl toluene. Suitable as component (ii) are divinyl esters or diallyl esters of polycarboxylic acids, divinyl ethers of polyhydric alcohols, and di- or tri-(meth)-acrylates of polyhydric alcohols, e.g. divinyl adipate, diallyl phthalate, ethylene glycol, divinyl ether and di-(meth)acrylates of C2-C4 glycols. In addition to the specified alkyl methacrylates, polymer A may additionally be derived from up to 20% by weight of a monomer such as alkyl acrylates, acrylic and methacrylic acids and their nitriles, vinyl halides, vinyl esters, styrene and vinyl toluene. Polymerization is effected in the presence of an initiator such as cumene hydroperoxide-sodium metabisulphite, diisopropyl benzene hydroperoxide-sodium formaldehyde sulphoxylate, t-butyl peracetate-sodium hydrosulphite or cumene hydroperoxide-sodium formaldehyde sulphoxylate; a mercaptan may also be present. The modifiers obtained can be blended with vinyl chloride polymers (i.e. polymers or copolymers containing at least 80% by weight of vinyl chloride) using 5-45 parts by weight of the former and 95-55 parts by weight of the latter. The blends may also contain stabilizers, such as tin, barium or cadmium compounds, lubricants such as a metal salt of a fatty acid, e.g. a stearate, and a pigment such as titanium dioxide. The blends can be used for forming pipes and other articles by extruding, moulding or calendering.
