Abstract
Epoxy resin compositions comprise an inorganic cement, a thermosetting epoxy resin, a curing agent for the resin (the resin may be its own curing agent), and a gelling agent. Suitable cements are various gypsum cements, high-alumina cements, Portland cements (including high-alkali types), and activated pozzolan, i.e. pozzolan containing sufficient Ca(OH)2 or other setting agent to impart cementitious properties thereto, suitable pozzolans including diatomaceous earth, opaline charts and shales, tuffs, volcanic ashes, pumicites, monterey shale, calcined clays and shales, and fly ash. The epoxy resin may be formed between (a) epichlorohydrin, dichlorohydrin, butadiene dioxide, diglycidyl ether, or 1,2-dichloro-3-hydroxypropane, and (b) any of numerous specified di- and tri-hydroxy phenols and bisphenols, polyalcohols, dihydroxy diphenyl sulphone, or a novolac resin. Particular resins mentioned are the condensation products of epichlorohydrin with Bisphenol A, Bisphenol F, and glycerol. Suitable curing agents are the resin itself, hydroxy compounds (e.g. phenol), a wide variety of amines, amides, organic acids and acid anhydrides, and polyamide-type condensation polymers of di- and tri-merized vegetable oils, unsaturated fatty acids and polyamides (e.g. those known commercially by the Trade Mark "Versamid"). Suitable gelling agents are proteinaceous glues and gelatines, polyvinyl alcohol, methyl cellulose and carboxymethyl cellulose. The compositions may contain a conventional aggregate, many of which are specified, fibreglass being particularly suitable.ALSO:Inorganic cement compositions comprise an inorganic cement, a thermosetting epoxy resin, a curing agent for the epoxy resin (the resin may be its own curing agent), and a gelling agent. Suitable cements are various gypsum cements, high-alumina cements, Portland cements (including high-alkali types), and activated pozzolan, i.e. pozzolan containing sufficient Ca(OH)2 or other setting agent to impart cementitious properties thereto, suitable pozzolans including diatomaceous earth, opaline cherts and shales, tuffs, volcanic ashes, pumicites, Monterey shale, calcined clays and shales, and fly ash. The epoxy resin may be formed between (a) epichlorohydrin, dichlorohydrin, butadiene dioxide, diglycidyl ether, or 1,2 dichloro - 3 - hydroxy - propane, and (b) any of numerous specified di- and tri-hydroxy phenols and bisphenols, polyalcohols, dihydroxy diphenyl sulphone, or a Novolac resin. Particular resins mentioned are the condensation products of epichlorohydrin with bisphenol A, bisphenol F and glycerol. Suitable curing agents are the resin itself, hydroxy compounds (e.g. phenol), a wide variety of amines, amides, organic acids and acid anhydrides, and polyamide-type condensation polymers of di- and tri-merized vegetable oils, unsaturated fatty acids and polyamides (e.g. those known commercially by the Trade Mark "Versamid"). Suitable gelling agents are proteinaceous glues and gelatines, polyvinyl alcohol, methyl cellulose and carboxymethyl cellulose. The compositions may contain a conventional aggregate, many of which are specified, fibreglass being particularly suitable.
