Abstract

1,112,820. Associative stores. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. 28 April, 1967, No. 19773/67. Heading G4C. An associative search is performed in a first store MS and if the required item isn't present, in a second store VS, there being provision to transfer items required more than a certain number of times from the second store VS to the first. Item-pairs are stored in respective rows of two stores MS, VS, each row of the second store also including a use count E for the respective pair. The first item of a pair whose second item is required is staticized at ST1 and compared AC1 with the first item from each row in turn of the first store MS, starting from the top. On equality, the second item of the pair reached is read out and the pair interchanged with the pair immediately above it. If none of the items match, the first item required is supplied to staticizer ST2 and compared AC2 with the first items of the second store VS, the second item of the pair giving equality being read out, with incrementing of the associated use count E. If none of the items match in the second store VS, the operator is informed OP (the required first item in ST2 being displayed) and he keys in the associated second item, the pair being placed in the top row of the second store VS with a use count of 1, the pairs already present being moved down one, the lowest being deleted. Alternatively, the new pair could replace the oldest pair in the store. The keyed-in item is also sent to the requesting equipment. If the same item is requested again, the operator is informed and he keys in the second item again for a check comparison with that obtained from the store VS. Only if there is agreement is the item sent to the requesting equipment. The use count of each item read out is checked at M and when it reaches a threshold value the pair is transferred to the top row of the first store MS, the pairs already present being moved down one, the lowest being deleted. If the threshold value is 2, transfer occurs on matching on the item in the second store VS, section E and unit M being unnecessary, and transfer being conditional on the check comparison mentioned showing agreement. Associative matching could be done on either item of the pair, selectively.
