Abstract

A carbonized fibre is made by heating an alkali-lignin, thiolignin or ligninsulphonate fibre from 400 DEG C. to a temperature at which the fibre becomes substantially graphite. The fibre can be preheated at 50-400 DEG C. in an atmosphere comprising oxygen or ozone or at 100-400 DEG C. in a closed vessel. After preheating the fibre can be heated at 400-2500 DEG C. in an inert gas e.g. Ar, N2 or CO2. The fibre can be heated from room temperature or the preheating temperature at a rate less than 50 DEG C/minimum. Polyvinyl alcohol, polyacrylonitrile or viscose can be incorporated in the lignin fibre. The carbon fibre can be activated by heating at 600-1000 DEG C. in the presence of a stream of gas which causes the carbonized material to be in active form. Suitable activating gases are air, oxygen or steam used in the amount 100-2000 cc. (STP)/gm. of fibre. Alternatively an actuating agent, e.g. ZnCl2 or S, or H2SO4, NaOH or KOH can be introduced into the melt or solution from which the fibre is spun. The fibre can be made by melt spinning, dry spinning or wet spinning.
