Abstract

[Also in Division F1] A hydrodynamic film of lubricant is maintained between an outer race of a rolling bearing and its support, the lubricant being withdrawn from the bearing so as to obviate the necessity of a separate source of lubricant supply for the film. In an embodiment, in order to damp vibrations transmitted to a support-member 18 from a rotating shaft 12, Fig. 2, a hydrodynamic " squeeze " film of lubricant is maintained in an annular clearance 30 provided between a cylindrical outer surface of a bearing outer race 17 and a cylindrical inner surface of the support-member 18. Lubricant for maintaining the " squeeze " film is taken from a layer 27 of lubricant which has been centrifuged from the bearing. The layer 27 supplies lubricant to the clearance 30, via galleries 32; passages 31 in the outer race 17; stand-pipes 35, which are mounted in a reservoir 34 and have baffles 36 therein; passages 37, which lead from the stand-pipes 35 to a reservoir 34 in the support-member 18; outlet passages 38, which are disposed centrally of the reservoir 34 and communicate with a central channel 40; and the latter which connects to the clearance 30. The purpose of the baffles 36 in the stand-pipes 35 is to de-aerate the lubricant. In another embodiment, a reservoir 44, Figs. 3 and 4, is formed between a flat portion 42 on a support-member 18 and a cap 43 attached thereto. A layer 27 of lubricant is connected to the reservoir 44, via passages 31 in an outer race 17 and passages 31a in the support-member 18. The reservoir 44 is connected to a " squeeze "-film clearance 30, via an aperture 45 in the support-member 18. Baffles 46 are positioned in the reservoir 44 to assist in separating air from the lubricant, the air escaping through vent-holes 47 in the cap 43.
