To diminish cross-talk, alternately opposite twists are applied to communication cable strands 11a-11d in a twisting machine S comprising two twisting heads B and B2 capable of rotating in unison in either direction, the machine S being situated between two fixed heads A1 and A2 through which the wires pass on entering and leaving the machine. In the simplest case, when wires which have been twisted between A1 and B1 by rotation of the machine reach the zone between B2 and A2, reversal of the rotation imparts a reversed twist to the wires between A1 and B1 whereas an additional twist in the same direction is imparted to the wires between B2 and A2. Reversal of rotation without untwisting of the wires between B2 and A2 may be carried out whenever the wires advance a distance L, the average of the distance between A1 and A2 and between B1 and B2, devided by an odd number. The required length of wire between the twisting heads may be supported on two pulley heads or an endless belt. A number of quads, each having imparted thereto alternate twists on machines as above may be stranded together with alternate twists in a further machine as illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown). Preferably, the individual quads have been treated at different rotational speeds with different reversal periods, or have different phases. The wires forming the quads may be bound together by passage through a bath of adhesive and the groups of quads may be bound by bonding strip or thread.
