Abstract
1,089,668. Television. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORTORATION. May 11, 1965 [June 1, 1964], No. 19842/65. Heading H4F. [Also in Division G5] A teaching apparatus comprises a storage means including e.g. stereo phonograph record or stereo magnetic tape for audio and video information, an audio selecting and reproducing means, a video monitor, e.g. a television set, and a storage and converting means for the video information, which latter means receives from the storage means the video information on a recording medium at a predetermined speed (e.g. below the persistence of vision), and reads stored video information at a higher predetermined speed (e.g. above the persistence of vision). The embodiment of Fig. 5 includes two storage and converting means in the form of magnetic recording drums 40, 42, and two read and write heads 44, 46 associated therewith. The drums are fast on sleeves 90, 92 slidable along a drive shaft 74 so that the drums may be engaged respectively with clutches 70 or 76, 78 or 72. The clutches 76, 78 are driven at a low speed via gear train 79 and rotatable sleeve 88, whilst high speed clutches 70, 72 are driven directly by the shaft. A switch 50 is so arranged that one head (46) is writing information on one drum (42) whilst the information on the other drum is being read and passed to the video monitor. The video information may be passed through electrical-optical converting means, to optical-electrical converting and storage means (Fig. 2, not shown). The converting and storage means (Fig. 3, not shown) may comprise two electron guns (writing and reading guns) which are diametrically opposed and which impinge an electron beam upon opposite sides of a target structure. Question and answer.-The storage medium for the audio and video information has audio and video tracks thereon so arranged that when the initial video picture is being viewed the corresponding audio information will be presented. The second video picture, which has been recorded by the storage and converting means during showing of the first video picture, is then shown and it may comprise a question and three possible answers. A student, upon selecting an answer, is connected to one of three tracks (each corresponding to an answer), which provides additional or remedial instructions.
