Abstract

1,088,029. Filter for separating water from fuel. BENDIX CORPORATION. Dec. 21, 1964 [Jan. 3, 1964], No. 51923/64. Heading B1D. Liquid fuel contaminated with water is introduced at 12 to a head 10 whence it passes downwards through a ferrule 34, in sealing engagement with the inside of a shouldered tubular member 1-6 connected to and extending from the head, to the inside of a substantially cylindrical coalescer element 32 located in a bowl 24 having an upper flange 26 and a water sump 28; the ferrule 34 extends from one end of the coalescer element and its sealing engagement is maintained by resilient means (preferably a spring 40) between element and bowl, the fuel emerging from element 32 flows upwards through a wire-mesh waterrepellent separator element 48 to outlet 14. Preferably element 32 consists of a pleated paper element 44 which retains most of the solid contaminants but allows free and emulsified water to pass through, and a surrounding fibre-glass batt 46 where emulsified water is coalesced to droplets which gravitate to the sump, and where very fine solids are retained. Element 48 is preferably coated with a synthetic material, and is in sealing abutment with the shoulder 18 formed on tubular member 16.
