Abstract
1,084,177. Wrapped tampons. TAMPAX Inc. April 29, 1965 [June 17, 1964], No. 18169/ 65. Heading A5R. A compressed tampon is made up of a pad of transversely oriented staple fibres 12 of cotton or other absorbent material with a liquid-pervious overwrap 22 secured to the pad by the same chain of stitches 14 which anchors the fibres together. The stitches may also secure a draw string 16 to the pad or may themselves be extended to form a string. The overwrap may be made from a soft thin fibrous non-woven material formed into a fabric by adhesive bonding, which adhesive may be coloured to contrast with the overwrap; suitable materials are cotton or cottonrayon bonded with a zig-zag pattern of coloured acrylic resin, and the overwrap may cover the face and ends only of the pad, as shown, or may enclose the entire pad. Partially covered pads are made by continuously wrapping a 4 inch wide web of longitudinally oriented staple fibres and cutting into pads of width 1¥ inches. The totally wrapped tampon is wrapped to give overlapping edges of wrapping. In both cases the chain of stitches is then added, and the pad compressed. The wrapping may alternatively be of gauze, knitted, leno-weave or apertured non-woven fabric.
