Abstract

108,339. Maclaurin, R. July 21, 1916. Resins and resinous compounds; varnishes.- Low-temperature tars, consisting largely of paraffinoid hydrocarbons, such as are obtained in accordance with Specification 24426/13, [Class 55 (i), Coking &c.], are separated into a black resinous portion and an oily portion by treatment with an hydrocarbon oil such as paraffin oil or gas oil in which the resinous bodies are insoluble. After agitation, the resinous portion is allowed to settle out. The addition of water aids in the separation, the water forming a layer between the layers of resin and oil. The resinous portion may be treated with further quantities of gas oil in order to purify it. A final punfication is effected by means of a light petroleum oil. The black resin obtained is dissolved in benzol, methylated spirit, &c. for use as varnish.
