Abstract

1,081,911. Moulding void-free glass reinforced resin. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. May 17, 1965 [Feb. 19, 1964], No. 6978/64. Heading B6A. A bubble-free reinforced plastics article is moulded from a layer 12 of glass fibre, covered with epoxy or polyester resin, in a mould base 11 covered by an imperforate flexible, e.g. rubber, membrane 13 within an autoclave 15; the autoclave 15 is depressurized, e.g. by a vacuum pump connected at 16 preferably to a lower pressure than the space between the mould 11 and membrane 13, to release bubbles entrapped by the membrane, which space is simultaneously evacuated of air and vapours formed during the polymerization process, via outlet 14, whilst the temperature is increased, e.g. to 60‹ C. by radiant heaters 17, to below the resin curing temperature to facilitate resin flow through the reinforcement. The lower pressure in the mould 11 is maintained whilst the autoclave temperature and pressure are raised, e.g. to 22 p.s.i. and 130‹ C., by the introduction of wet steam via pipe 18 to complete the cure. The autoclave pressure may also further be increased by the introduction of air whilst maintaining the temperature of 130‹ C.
