Abstract
Paper-making apparatus, of the type wherein paper stock is directed in between two forming belts, includes a stationary element having a curved permeable surface over which the belts are trained to produce convergence of the belts, the belts being free of any restraining means in contact therewith opposite the curved surface, and means for withdrawing water from the stock through the permeable surface. The stationary element which is mounted below the horizontally extending forming zone is formed by a suction box having a curved surface composed of blades of stainless steel or of fabric or paper impregnated with phenol-formaldehyde resin. The blades extend at a slight angle to the machine direction. There are a plurality of vanes in the suction box to channel the water to an exit at one end or to an exit at each end of the box. A further suction box may be positioned between the stationary element and the breast roll and a scraper blade opposite the stationary element immediately downstream thereof. Each belt is composed of an outer Fourdrinier wire and an inner nylon belt.
