Abstract
<PICT:1065732/C1/1> A decorative effect is provided on glass objects by superficially heating at least a part of a surface with a concentrated source of heat to produce internal stresses in the object, and then allowing a coolant liquid to act upon the object to effect a cracking which results in flakes which can be removed. Preferably the glass object 12 is immersed in a bath 10 of a non-inflammable liquid such as water wherein it is heated by means of an oxy-acetylene flame 16 or an electric arc. When heating is interrupted, the liquid immediately causes thermal shock on the object 12. The coolant liquid is continually stirred with a circulatory motion and its depth above the object 12 may be varied for different effects. To aid the flaking, the glass object may be pre-cut and may be smeared with an oil or grease to prevent too great a shock, or may be masked with insulating material.
