A method of determining the frequency of a signal comprises deriving a phase quadrature signal from the signal, differentiating the two signals, multiplying in modulators each signal by the differential of the other and finally sub- - tracting the modulation products to produce a voltage proportional to the frequency of the signal. The signal whose frequency is to be measured may be used directly, Fig. 1 (not shown), or alternatively it may be heterodyned with a standard frequency and the measurement made on the beat frequency, Fig. 2 (not shown). For low frequency signals, the signal and quadrature signal are modulated on to a carrier frequency, Fig. 3 (not shown).
