Abstract

1,048,122. Plate-type heat-exchangers. T. P. NICHOLSON. May 8, 1963 [Feb. 9, 1962; Oct. 30, 1962], Nos. 5059/62 and 40991/62. Heading F4S. A heat-exchanger plate comprises a central quadrilateral area of continuous corrugations (3) projecting on both sides of the median plane of the plate, and extending parallel to two flat, marginal edge portions of the plate, the plate having triangular end zones beyond the corrugations and each bounded by one of the marginal edge portions. The triangular end zones may be flat, dimpled, corrugated transversely of the plate or provided with short fluid directing corrugations. Triangular corrugated sheets may be secured to the end zones of the plates when these are flat (Figs. 1, 4, 5 and 7, not shown). In a stack of the plates, the respective fluids may enter and leave the plate interspaces by openings formed either at the ends or at the sides of the assembly, the plate interspaces being sealed at their edges by straight or L-shaped spacing strips (10, 11) and the assembly being welded or brazed between backing plates (7). Alternatively the edges of adjacent plates may interlock (Fig. 9, not shown). Mutual support for the plates at the end zones is provided by the corrugations or dimples in these zones and these may project from one side of the plate to a distance twice the height of the main corrugations (3) (Fig. 3, not shown). Alternatively in these zones, dimples equal in height to the main corrugations (3) may project from both faces of the plate. In an annular plate assembly described, the alternate passage spacing strips (10) are tapered (Fig. 2), whilst the intermediate spacing strips (11) are of uniform thickness.
