Abstract
Polyurethanes are prepared by reacting an organic polyisocyanate with a polyol which has been prepared by telomerization of a negatively substituted olefin with an aldehyde in the presence of a cationic polymerization catalyst. The negatively substituted olefin is defined as any ethylenically unsaturated compound in which one of the ethylenic carbon atoms carries an electron attracting substituent, e.g. a halogen atom or the oxygen atoms present in vinyl ethers, carboxylic acid ester groups present in vinyl esters, nitrile groups, unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbon radicals present in styrene. Olefins specified are: 1,3-butadiene, isoprene, vinyl acetate, methyl vinyl ether, ethyl vinyl ether, divinyl ether, diisopropenyl ether and 3,4 - dihydro - 2H - pyran - 2 - methyl - (3,4-dihydro - 2H - pyran - 2 - carboxylate), styrene a -methyl styrene, vinyltoluenes, divinylbenzenes. Cationic polymerization catalysts specified are: suphuric acid and Lewis acids, e.g. BF3, AlCl3 and SnCl4. The aldehyde may be formaldehyde or acetaldehyde or paraformaldehyde. The polyols produced may have a M.W. of 200-15,000 and are reacted with polyisocyanates, optionally in admixture with other polyols and blowing agents, to form poly-urethane coatings or foams. In Example (1) a polyol prepared by the telomerization of styrene with formaldehyde, water, trichloro-fluoromethane, siloxane, stannous octoate and crude diphenyl methane diisocyanate were mixed and allowed to react to form a foam.
