Abstract

1,034,118. Electron multipliers. RADIO CORPORATION OF AMERICA. June 7, 1963 [June 26, 1962], No. 22865/63. Heading H1D. An electron multiplier tube comprises a secondary-electron-emissive coating 18, Fig. 1, extending continuously over the inner surface of the tube envelope from adjacent a source of primary electrons 14 to a collector electrode 16, the envelope having a curved longitudinal axis, and there being no straight electron path between source 14 and collector 16. As shown, a semicircular tube 12 is coated with a resistive, secondary-emissive layer 18 having one end connected to, and possibly continuous with, a grounded photo-cathode 14, and its other end 1000 v. positive, collector 16 being 1100 v. positive. Alternatively, the tube envelope may have a helical, spiral, serpentine or toroidal form. In the latter case, photo-cathode 28, Fig. 2 (not shown), may be arranged on a transparent support 26 adjacent, but at an angle to, radial collector 32. The secondaryemissive layer may be tin oxide, a caesiumactivated antimony film, a mosaic of caesiumactivated globules of oxidized silver or antimony on a resistive layer, or a helical platinum coating. Thicknesses and specific resistances of such coatings are given.
