Abstract

A methane-containing gas is made by providing a mixture of two gases, both containing CH4, oxides of carbon, and H2, one of the gases being such that after methanation it would contain CH4 and CO2, and the other gas having excess H2 and being such that after methanation it would consist principally of CH4 and H2, and effecting methanation to react the carbon oxides with H2 to produce CH4 and steam, the proportions of the two gases being selected so that the final gas contains substantially no oxides of carbon or H2 (i.e. not more than 10% by volume). The first gas should contain at least 50% by volume CH4 and may be made by catalytic steam reforming paraffinic hydrocarbons and the second gas may be coke oven gas or a gas obtained by gasifying light distillate or heavy oil. The methanation is carried out catalytically in the range 250 DEG to 500 DEG C. and at a pressure up to 100 atmos., preferably 10 to 50 atmos. In a specific example, desulphurized coke oven gas is mixed with petroleum distillate, and after further purification, the mixture is gasified with steam, over a nickel-alumina catalyst, e.g. of the kind described in Specification 969,637, steam condensed and removed, and the dry gas mixed with the purified coke oven gas for methanation. The final dried gas contained 83.15% by volume CH4. The methanation catalyst must be cooled, e.g. by recycling cooled product gas or by cooling coils. The composition of the final gas can be controlled by adjusting the temperatures of the two catalyst beds. In a modification of the example described above, some or all of the purified coke oven gas is mixed with the mixture of coke oven gas and distillate after the purification of that mixture but before its gasification (see Fig., not shown).
