Abstract

1,026,751. Two-part couplings. M.B. METALS Ltd. April 18, 1962 [April 20, 1961], No. 14291/61. Heading H2E. In an electrical connector having plug-andsocket members containing co-operating contact pairs, contacts 45, 46 on plug member 40 present cylindrical contact surfaces for engagement at a plurality of points by contacts 14, 15 on socket member 10, each of the latter being in the form of a wire having a non-cylindrical contact surface with radial resiliency at its points of engagement with the plug contact. The socket body 10 contains a cylindrical cup 11 with two ceramic sleeves 12, 13 brazed therein, and wire contacts 14, 15 mounted rearwardly by brazing into ferrules 16, 17 on sleeves 12, 13 and held at their forward ends by recessed ceramic rings 20, 21, 22 which insulate them from each other and from body 10. Wires 14 and 15 are made of durable high-temperature resistant alloy coated with platinum-ruthenium, and are squareshaped as shown in Fig. 3. Thermocouple wires 27, 28 extending along steel tube 26 and through an end-closure member 23, are connected to contacts 14, 15 in a gas-tight enclosure formed by member 23 and cup 11. The cooperating plug body 40 has an enlarged end portion 41 which fits over the tapered edge 10b of socket body 10, and contains a contact assembly consisting of insulating rings 42, 43, 44 between which two platinum discs 45, 46 are clamped by screws 49 passing through a tapered front disc 48 and threaded into a backing member 47. Connecting rods 50 and 51 extending through the contact assembly are brazed at their front ends to discs 45, 46, and have a similar terminal arrangement to that used for contact members 14, 15 in socket member 10. In a further embodiment, a tenway connector (Figs. 4, 5, not shown), comprises plug-and-socket members in which contact members are assembled between stacks of insulators at the front of the bodies, and are connected as before at the rear.
