Abstract

1,026,110. Blasting. PARIGBORN CORPORATION. July 2, 1964 [July 10, 1963], No. 27320/64. Heading B3D. An abrasive particle throwing wheel comprises: (i) a rotatable head, radially extending throwing vane channels extending into one face of the head, the width of the channels increasing as they extend into the head face; (ii) throwing vanes mounted in the channels to extend perpendicular from the head face, the vanes having an elongated cutout in the inner portion of the base of the vane; (iii) a compression spring resting on the floor of the channel and extending into the cut-out to urge the vane upwardly against the channel walls; (iv) a locking pin seat in the floor of the channel near the head periphery, a locking join in the seat which join extends upwardly into the channel, a second cutout in the inner portion of the vane base for accommodating that portion of the locking pin which extends into the channel; and (v) means at the head centre for urging the vane outwardly against the locking pin to form a tight fit. A runner head 1 mounted on a rotatable shaft 3 has in one face radial channels 11 having tapered side walls 29. A double-face vane 5 is introduced at the head periphery into a channel 11 and moved therealong until the innermost end abuts the centre stud 15 of the head. A locking pin 17 is inserted in a hole 19 in the head and the vane moved radially outward so that a tapered surface 21<SP>1</SP> on a cut-out 23 in the vane rides on a tapered surface 21 on the pin. A leaf spring 25 located in a cut-out 27 in the vane forces the vane upwardly in the channel. When all the vanes are in position, a locking ring 9 secured in an annular channel 13 around the centre stud 15, forcing the vanes against the locking pins. Single face vanes 7 are similarly secured, the locking pins 33, Fig. 9, being of simpler shape. The outer ends of the vanes are flush with the periphery of the head. In a modification, Fig. 16, the locking pin 42 for single face vane 40 has a groove or indent 44 facing the periphery of the head; to remove the pin, a screw driver or other blade is inserted in the indent and the vane wedged upward to remove the pin 42 from its hole 46. The cut-out 52 in the vane has a curved wall 34, the lower end of which abuts against the pin. The channels are shaped as shown in Fig. 17. A double face vane 60, Figs. 23 and 24, has the faces tapering inwardly at the inner end of the vane to eliminate bunching of the abrasive. The recess 64 in the head 1 for the locking pin 62 extends outwardly at an angle, e.g. 45 degrees, to the vertical.
