Abstract

b - Trichloromethyl - b - propiolactone is prepared by reacting trichloroacetaldehyde with ketene in the absence of a catalyst and in the absence of a solvent at a temperature below 50 DEG C. It is preferable to introduce ketene into an excess of anhydrous trichloroacetaldehyde, advantageously using about 50 mol. per cent excess of the aldehyde.
