Abstract

Teleprinters connected via an exchange can operate at more than one speed, and after connection being established at the lowest speed are switched in response to be a prearranged signal to operate at a higher speed. In one embodiment the connection is set up by dialling after the identity of the called station is requested at 50 Bd. in 5-unit code. The serial data on the line is converted to parallel and, if received in 5-unit code, is converted to 6-unit code to operate the printer. The calling station next transmits a command from its keyboard to change both teleprinters to a higher speed or to a 6-unit code. A circuit at both stations responds to this command to change the speed of the distributers and, if necessary, to inhibit the 5/6- unit converter. The calling station now transmits its identity (stored on punched tape) and the message. When the connection is cleared both teleprinters revert to operation for 50 Bd. signals. Start and stop bits may be added and deleted by the distributers.
