Abstract
1,019,857. Jet propulsion nozzles. ROLLSROYCE Ltd. Nov. 11, 1964, No. 46053/64. Heading F1J. A noise shield extends beneath a jet nozzle, the nozzle and the shield being relatively disposed or disposable so that the latter extends downstream of the former, whereby noise is reflected upwardly. As shown, a pod 12, in which is mounted a gas turbine engine, is cut away at its downstream end at 30 to form the noise shield 31. The engine jet pipe 14 is mounted within an outer casing 15. A nozzle member 17 is provided with three angularly spaced guides 25 each carrying two axially spaced rollers 26 movable along one of three tracks 27 mounted within the pod. The nozzle member 17 is movable by a ram 23 between the downstream full line and the upstream dotted line positions. In the former position the silencer is not effective and portions 20, 21 of the member 17 and the outer casing 15 respectively abut to prevent jet gases passing therebetween. In the latter position the silencer is effective and an annular gap 24 is formed between the nozzle member and the outer casing, gases from the jet pipe 14 flowing therethrough and the effective area of the nozzle being thus increased.
