Abstract

In an air-conditioning unit a box 17, flexibly mounted within a hollow closed container 1, contains a fan 40 which draws in air through openings 39 and 25 and discharges air via a sound attenuating duct 51 to outlet 13 and the box and the container are constructed so that sound attempting to pass from the box to the outlet 13, otherwise than through the duct must pass through a pair of spaced metal plates, one forming part of the box and one forming part of the container. The silencer is mounted on a felt gasket 11 (Fig. 2, not shown) internally of a room wall 10, having a ventilating opening 9. The container 1 has a rectangular inlet duct 25 surrounded by polyurethane foam 26, an outlet 12 covered by a perforated grill 13, and is divided into upper and lower compartments 16, 15, by plate 14. The upper compartment 16 contains a box 17, a polyurethane foam layer 24 being interposed between plate 14 and the front 18 and bottom 22. Transverse partitions 27, 28 are connected by four short crosspartitions each with an upper curved edge 33. A curved plate 36 is carried by sector plates 34 pivoted at 35, under the control of an external knob. Two electrically-driven fans 40 mounted on vibration dampers 44 discharge into a duct 48 leading to duct 51. When plate 36 is rotated to cover the inlet leading from duct 38, the fans 40 draw in air through duct 25 and deliver it into the room through ducts 48, 51 and outlet 12. Duct 48 may be as described in Specification 733,329. Duct 38 is arranged in duct 48 and leads to grill 39, so that room air can be drawn in under the control of the damper 36 and mixed and recirculated with fresh air entering duct 25. An air filter 57 may be installed and electrical heating means (not shown), controlled thermostatically in dependence on the room air temperature, may be mounted in the container 1.
