Abstract

Vinyl polymers containing hydroxyl and aldehyde groups in the molecule which are suitable for the treatment of synthetic polyester, polyacrylonitrile or partially acetylated cellulose fibre fabrics, are produced by the reaction of vinyl acetate with acrolein or acrolein diacetate in the presence of a ,a 1-azobisisobutyronitrile or benzoyl peroxide and saponification of the polymer produced with caustic soda. The vinyl polymers may be applied to the fabrics as aqueous solutions containing an aminoplast resin, e.g. dimethylolurea, dimethylol ethylene urea, dimethylolurane, dimethylol glyoxal monourein, tetramethylolacetylene diurea, dimethylol triazone and their alkylated compounds, and magnesium chloride as catalyst.ALSO:Fabrics comprising synthetic polyester, polyacrylonitrile or partially acetylated cellulose fibres alone or in admixture with natural cellulosic or animal fibres are given an improved dirt-preventing effect and hardness by soaking them in a resin bath containing an aqueous solution of a vinyl polymer containing hydroxyl and aldehyde groups in the molecule which is obtained by saponification of a copolymer of vinyl acetate with acrolein or acrolein diacetate, and magnesium chloride as catalyst. The vinyl polymers used may have molecular weights of more than 20,000 and less than 1,000,000 and the structure <FORM:1017153/D1-D2/1> in which x and y are whole numbers and the ratio x : y is 5-20 : 95-80. The magnesium chloride is preferably added in an amount of more than 15% by weight of an aqueous 30% by weight magnesium chloride solution to a 15% by weight paste of the vinyl polymer. The treating solution may also contain an aminoplast resin, e.g. dimethylolurea, dimethylol ethyleneurea, dimethylolurane dimethylol glyosal monourein, tetramethylolacetylene diurea, dimethylol triazone and their alkylated compounds.
