Abstract
1,013,917. Radio beacons; aerials. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Oct. 26, 1962, No. 40619/62. Headings H4A and H4D. In a Doppler V.O.R. beacon, of the kind wherein a central aerial 22 transmits a carrier wave, and upper and lower side bands of the carrier are respectively radiated from diametrically opposite aerials 16 and 17, which are switched around a circular array by commutator means 18 and 19, to produce Doppler modulation of the sideband signals at a remote location, radiative interactions between the central aerial 22 and the circular array and viceversa are counteracted by antiphase energy introduced by means of coupling networks 25/26, coupling the feed to the central aerial to the feeds to the diametrically opposing elements. The networks each comprise a variable phase shifter 25 and a variable attenuator 26, and are adjusted until the coupling path between points 27 and 28 (on 29 and 27) is equal in attenuation to, and differs in electrical length by an odd multiple of #/2 from, the coupling path 27, 16, 22, 28 (or 29, 17, 22, 28). The attenuation 26 may be of a type consuming and radiating almost no power, and comprising a pair of fixed capacitors inserted in series in the centre lead of a coaxial cable, and a variable capacitor coupling the junction of the two capacitors with the outer conductor of the coaxial cable.
